REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

13 October 2016 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

So…winter is on its way, the nights are drawing in, the temperature is dropping, the wind and rain are on the increase, not to mention the leaves have started to fall rapidly. Oh yes, and Christmas is on the horizon too! Your tender plants will need protection from the frost, gales and driving rain so it would be a good idea to move them into the greenhouse or other sheltered area, or cover them in situ if moving them is not an option for you. If, like us, you love nature then remember that winter can really take its toll on wildlife and so if you have a bird house in your garden, remember to stock this with food and water – the birds would be extremely grateful!

Here are Really Green Smart’s top gardening tips for November:

  • If you are leaving your pots out over the winter, raise them from the ground to prevent water logging.
  • Insulate your outdoor containers to protect them from the frost, we use bubble wrap – it works really well.
  • Stock up your bird food and water – this will encourage birds into your garden.
  • As November is the month of bonfires, if it is possible and permissible where you live, this is a good time to dispose of excess debris which is unfit for composting purposes.
  • If you have roses, now is a good time to prune them, this well help prevent wind-rock.
  • It is now time to clear up fallen leaves, especially from beds, ponds and lawns.
  • If you love tulips, now is a good time to plant your bulbs ready for a beautiful spring display next year.
  • If you are planning to plant winter bedding plants, now is the time to do so!
  • We love brassicas but pigeons can be a real problem is some areas, cover them with netting to keep the birds at bay.
  • Winter brings moths, if you have fruit trees we would recommend using grease bands around the trunks.

If this all sounds like too much for you, then call us and we will be happy to help keep your garden and grounds looking Really Green and Smart all year round.
