REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR MARCH

15 February 2017 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

Spring is fast approaching and come mid-March the more frequent sunny days provide the perfect opportunity to increase your gardening activity. Preparing your seed beds, sowing your seeds, generally tidying your garden after the windy and wet winter months, cutting back hedges and shrubs are just some of the tasks you can be getting on with.

Here are Really Green Smarts top gardening tips for March which will help to keep your garden looking really green and smart all year round.

  • Prune climbing and bush roses.
  • Plant your summer flowering bulbs.
  • Start to hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control.
  • If you keep fish in your garden pond, March is the time to start feeding them and, depending on the weather conditions in your area, you may need to remove your pond heater.
  • Protect any new spring shoots from the slugs. They love them!!
  • If growing vegetables is your thing, plant your early potatoes, onions and shallots.
  • Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed). Keep your eye on the grass as the weather turns drier and warmer the grass will begin to grow more rapidly.
  • If you keep containers in your garden, March is a good time to top dress them with fresh compost.
  • Check any plants you planted in your greenhouse earlier to see if any are now ready to re-pot in larger sized pots.
  • If you have overgrown clumps of perennials, lift and divide these into smaller, more manageable, sizes. This will give them a new lease of life!
