REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR JUNE

07 June 2016 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

Summer is here and the longest day of the year, 21st June, is fast approaching, this means more light (and with luck) more warm sunshine. The gardens and grounds will be bursting with colour and growth and, unfortunately, that includes weeds, they will be springing up everywhere!

Here are some top tips for keeping your grounds and gardens looking Really Green and Smart.

1. Hoe borders regularly to keep the weeds down. Remove all the weeds with long roots to discourage re-growth.

2. As the warmer weather approaches, be mindful of water usage in drought affected areas, if you have water butts, check they are in good condition and repair – be water wise!

3. Be mindful of the strong sun, keep your greenhouses shaded to keep them cool and prevent scorching.

4. It’s now time to position those summer hanging baskets and containers outside.

5. Mow the lawn at least every week or fortnight (depending on where you live and growing conditions).

6. Prune your spring flowering bulbs.

7. Now is the time to plant your summer beds and raised borders.

8. If you have early potatoes, lettuce, radish and other salad type crops, now is the time to harvest them.

9. Pinch the outside shoots on your tomatoes.

10. If you find that some of your plants are tall or ‘drooping’, tie them to stakes to keep them upright.
