REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR FEBRUARY

25 January 2017 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

February brings the first signs of spring as bulbs begin to appear and wildlife becomes a little more active as temperatures begin to increase and days stay lighter a little longer. There are lots of things that you can do indoors to prepare for the coming season. As the garden comes to life again it’s time to prune climbers, shrubs and trim evergreen hedges.

Here are some top tips to help keep your garden looking Really Green and Smart all year round:

  • If you are growing fruit and vegetables in your garden, now is a good time to put netting in place to keep the birds off.
  • Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter, remember to remove any dead grass from evergreen grasses to keep it in good condition and repair.
  • Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow some vegetables under cover to enhance a good and healthy crop.
  • If you have winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering, now would be a good time to prune them to keep them in good condition and help produce healthy flower growth next winter.
  • Are you a Wisteria fan? If so, February is a good month to prune!
  • Remember to protect the blossom on fruit, such as peaches, apricots and nectarines,
  • Renovate overgrown deciduous hedges and prune hardy evergreen hedges.
  • Divide bulbs such as snowdrops.
  • Prune any conservatory climbers you may have.
  • You may like to take the opportunity to create a pond in your garden.
  • If you are thinking of adding a timber building to your garden, now is a good time to start planning so that the work can be done during the drier and warmer months. Protective finishes need to be applied when the wood is dry to protect your new building during the wetter, winter months.
  • If you have ground that needs recovering, start to think about getting this done now, so that you have the remaining time of the year to plant or plan how to make best use of your newly discovered living space.
