REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

21 November 2016 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

It’s getting colder and the daylight hours are much reduced, the sunshine becomes more scarce and Jack Frost will no doubt be doing his yearly rounds and who knows, we may even have a white Christmas! Working in the garden on a cold day is not to everyone’s liking but there are some jobs that still need to be done to keep your gardens and grounds healthy all year round. Here are Really Green Smart Garden Co’s top tips to help you along the way.

  • Insulate your outside taps!
  • Protect ponds from freezing
  • If you are a fruit grower, it is time to prune open-grown apples and pears (but do not prune those you have trained against your walls)
  • If you have acer, birch and vines in your grounds or gardens, now is a good time to prune them to avoid ‘bleeding’
  • Check any winter protection you have around your grounds or garden to ensure they are still securely in place.
  • Now is the time to reduce watering of houseplants.
  • If you have a greenhouse, just check to ensure the heater is working.
  • If you plan to take hardwood cuttings, now is a good time to do so.
  • If you have parsnips, sprouts (the Christmas favourite!) winter cabbages or other root crops, now is a good time to harvest them.
  • If you have stored produce, take necessary precautions to keep rodents etc away.
  • If you have paths around your garden, you may want to ensure you have some salt available for icy days.
  • If you feel happy that you have done all your jobs for this month, then sit back and relax with a mince pie, mulled wine or a nice cup of tea and read through some gardening books and start planning your garden for next year.

If all this sounds too much (or you just don’t fancy getting the wellies out!), then give us a call and we would be happy to help you maintain, plan your garden for next year or carry out garden or grounds landscaping work while you sit back and relax!

Love life and enjoy your garden
